SHARING THE GULF begins with the story of how, prior to european settlement, millions of seabirds once occupied the mountainous land in the central North Island of New Zealand. We then travel to Great Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf where the surviving population of around 4000 Black Petrels return annually to mate and raise their chicks. This story tells of the efforts of conservationists and fishers to save this astonishing species from extinction.

SHARING WORLDS follows Otago fishermen as they crawl through nettles and gorse to retrieve yellow-eyed penguin chicks as part of the joint Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust and local Department of Conservation monitoring programme. It also takes us to sea aboard the fishing boat Aurora to view mitigation measures used by the fishers to minimise the risks to seabirds.
